CrimeLab

CrimeLab supports research-creation projects that draw on new media to critique the impact of technology on the human condition. The projects outlined here are currently underway at CrimeLab or will be undertaken in the fall of 2007. Additional details forthcoming.

Moral Meter

This project, conceptualized by UK artist Dane Watkins, plans to develop an interactive personality profiler. The piece would give the audience a playful way of evaluating their psychology through an animated questionnaire from which they select icons, building up their profile and giving them feedback visually and by defining their personality type. The project will be developed in collaboration with students in Marcel O'Gorman's course, The Discourse of Advertising.

Dreadmill

Dreadmill is a treadmill hardwired to a laptop so that a runner's speed and heart rate interact with a multimedia display. In performances of 5-7 kms, O'Gorman runs, manipulates an interface, and lectuers about the impact of technology of the body. Dreadmill has been performed at several galleries and universities across North America. Additional details at http://dreadmill.net .

OncoGeiger

This project involves harnessing the residual radiation from cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment, and transforming it into interactive media. The goal of this work is to give a therapeutic voice to the patients and raise awareness about cancer. OncoGeiger combines the radioactive technology of Reverend Luke Murphy with the criminal mind of Marcel O'Gorman.

Cycle Of Dread (Dreadmill 2.0)

Cycle of Dread combines the concept of "Dreadmill" with Dane Watkins' web-based animation, "Empty Days." The project will invite users to pedal a stationery bike and control an animated narrative by adjusting their heart rate. The goal of this piece is to encourage users to achieve the state of "flow" while simultaneously engaging in an critical examination of technology. This project is funded by a SSHRC Seed Grant.
